Charlotte, NC — New York City FC punched their ticket to the Eastern Conference Semifinals with a 3-1 victory over Charlotte FC in Game 3 of their best-of-three Round One playoff series Friday night at Bank of America Stadium. The fifth-seeded visitors won the series 2-1 after Charlotte forced a decisive third match with a penalty shootout victory in Game 2.

Nicolás Fernández's two-goal performance proved the difference as New York City eliminated the fourth-seeded home side in front of 34,473 spectators. The victory sets up a Conference Semifinal clash against top-seeded Philadelphia Union.

The hard-fought series saw New York City take Game 1 on the road with a 1-0 victory before Charlotte answered with resilience in Game 2. After a scoreless draw at Yankee Stadium, Charlotte prevailed 7-6 on penalty kicks to force the winner-take-all Game 3 back at Bank of America Stadium.

Head coach Pascal Jansen's side showed championship mettle in the decisive match, controlling the tactical battle with a compact defensive block that frustrated Charlotte's possession-oriented approach throughout. The tactical chess match appeared headed for a goalless halftime until Fernández struck in second-half stoppage time. The forward capitalized on a defensive lapse, finding space between Charlotte's center backs before firing past goalkeeper Kristijan Kahlina. The goal punished Charlotte's advanced positioning at the most crucial moment of the half.

Any hopes of a Charlotte comeback evaporated five minutes into the second half when Alonso Martínez doubled the lead. Maxi Moralez provided the assist with a precise through ball that split Charlotte's defensive line, and Martínez calmly slotted home to make it 2-0. The goal forced Charlotte to commit more numbers forward, but New York City's defensive organization held firm.

Idan Toklomati effectively sealed the result in the 81st minute, converting from close range after excellent work from Archie Goodwin. Charlotte's consolation goal came deep in stoppage time when Fernández completed his brace, though it provided little more than a statistical footnote to New York City's dominant performance.

The statistics told the story of contrasting efficiency levels. While Charlotte edged possession 51.6% to 48.4%, New York City was far more clinical in the final third. The visitors registered six shots on target from just eight attempts, converting three for a remarkable 50% conversion rate. Charlotte, despite attempting 15 shots, managed just one on target—their stoppage-time goal. New York City goalkeeper Matt Freese made zero saves, while Kahlina faced six shots on target and made four saves.

Moralez controlled proceedings from midfield, completing passes at a high percentage while providing the crucial assist for Martínez's insurance goal. His ability to dictate tempo and find passing lanes through Charlotte's midfield proved invaluable to New York City's tactical approach. For Charlotte, Hannes Wolf showed glimpses of quality with his late assist, but the home side lacked the cutting edge required to break down New York City's disciplined defensive structure.

New York City now advances to face top-seeded Philadelphia Union in the Eastern Conference Semifinals. Their blend of defensive discipline and clinical finishing in transition makes them dangerous opponents despite the lower seeding. For Charlotte, the season ends after forcing a dramatic Game 3. Head coach Dean Smith's side showed character in the penalty shootout victory but couldn't find the attacking efficiency needed when it mattered most.

Charlotte FC 1 (Fernández 90'+10'), New York City FC 3 (Fernández 45'+2', Martínez 50', Toklomati 81'). Attendance: 34,473. Series: New York City FC wins 2-1.
