PUMAS UNAM ARRIVES IN ORLANDO WITH CONFIDENCE AHEAD OF LEAGUES CUP OPENER

Mexican Giants Complete Final Preparations at Omni Resort as Navas-Led Squad Eyes Group Stage Success
ORLANDO, FL — Club Universidad Nacional, commonly known as Pumas UNAM, concluded their final training session at the Omni Resort on Monday evening, putting the finishing touches on their preparation for Wednesday July 30, 2025 at 8pm night's Leagues Cup group stage opener against Orlando City SC at Inter&Co Stadium.
The Mexican first division club, which arrived in Orlando on Monday July 28, used Tuesday's evening session to acclimate to the challenging Florida heat and humidity that has become a trademark of summer soccer in Central Florida. Under the watchful eye of head coach Efraín Juárez, the squad appeared sharp and focused as they fine-tuned their tactical approach for the tournament opener.
The team looked relaxed and ready for the game. The evening timing allowed Pumas to simulate match conditions while avoiding the peak afternoon heat that has proven challenging for visiting teams throughout MLS history.
Juárez Seeks to Make His Mark
At the helm of this Pumas side is Efraín Juárez, one of Mexico's youngest coaches who continues to work toward establishing his reputation in Liga MX. Often described as intense and unique, Juárez has brought a fresh tactical approach to the storied Mexico City club and sees the Leagues Cup as an opportunity to showcase his philosophy against MLS competition. Juárez brings European tactical training and Colombian championship experience to his role, demonstrating his commitment to implementing his proven soccer philosophy. In his second team as a head coach, he wants to prove he knows what he is doing.
Star Power Anchors Pumas' Ambitions
Pumas' championship hopes rest largely on legendary goalkeeper Keylor Navas, whose signing from Newell's Old Boys has energized supporters. The Costa Rican veteran, who famously starred for Real Madrid and PSG, joined Pumas after his Argentine stint ended in controversy when he refused to play following his benching against Banfield.
However, it may be midfielder Adalberto Carrasquilla who proves most crucial in Tuesday's opener. The Panamanian star transferred to Pumas from Houston Dynamo FC in MLS, giving him intimate knowledge of both the league and specifically Orlando City SC. His familiarity with MLS playing styles and Orlando's tactical tendencies could provide Pumas with a significant strategic advantage.
Challenging Group Awaits
Pumas face a demanding Leagues Cup group that will test their depth and resolve. After opening against Orlando City on Tuesday at 8:00 PM, they'll face Atlanta United on Saturday, August 2 at 9:00 PM, before concluding group play against Inter Miami CF on Wednesday, August 6 at 7:30 PM.
The Mexican side enters the tournament with high expectations, boasting what many consider one of their strongest squads in recent years. With the combination of Navas' world-class goalkeeping, Carrasquilla's MLS experience, and Juárez's tactical innovation, Pumas appears well-positioned to advance from what promises to be a competitive group.
Tuesday's match against Orlando City will mark the beginning of what Pumas hopes will be a memorable Leagues Cup campaign, as they seek to add international silverware to their storied trophy cabinet.
